Embracing My Inner Plant Mom: A Journey I Never Expected

Updated: Apr 25

It all started with a fiddle leaf fig and a spider plant—two little green gifts from my sister. She and my mom didn’t think I’d keep them alive. And honestly? I wasn’t too sure either. I liked the look of plants, not the work that came with keeping them alive.

But something changed.

At first, I was googling everything. How much water? Is this too much sun? Why is this leaf being dramatic? But over time, I got the hang of it. I started talking to them, checking on them, even moving them around like they were royalty, depending on their vibe that day. And to my surprise, they started thriving. So did I.

That one small corner turned into something bigger. My sunroom slowly morphed into a plant room—my very own inside greenhouse, where I pretend to be a botanical wizard! It's like I opened a portal to the Plant Kingdom, and now I’m the proud parent of a leafy family that thrives on my questionable care. Who knew I could keep so many plants alive? It's peaceful, bright, and full of green life—kind of like a spa day for my soul, except instead of cucumber slices on my eyes, I have ferns staring at me like they’re judging my life choices!

Of course, I’ve had my moments. Like the time I tried to grow mint from seeds and... absolutely nothing happened. Just dirt. No mint. I gave up and bought a little mint plant instead. Her name is Minty now, and she’s doing just fine.

Meet the Plant Babies

Here’s the lineup of my plant crew—each one with a name and a little piece of my heart:

  • Fiddle – The OG fiddle leaf fig who started it all.

  • Curtis – My spider plant, sassy and strong.

  • Nyla – Sweet and calm, she settled in beautifully.

  • Rathner – A corn plant with big drama energy (but we love her).

  • HER – My arrowhead plant, soft but fierce.

  • Imani – My Dumb Cane, always making a statement.

  • Ari – A Purple Heart with major attitude.

  • Moody Rudy– My thriving mint plant (we don’t talk about the seed era).

  • Sadie – My Silver Bay beauty, elegant and low maintenance.

  • Lucky – My Lucky Bamboo, the latest addition, and a whole vibe.

I never expected to be a plant mom. But now, I’m fully in it—naming them, caring for them, rearranging the room like it’s a jungle interior design project. And you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
